“JJANG!” of the Day: COUPLE TEES *한국어*

I am currently writing in a coffee shop near my apartment in Hongdae waiting for my company’s International conference call to start. In Richmond, Virginia it started at 2pm(EST), but in Korea that means 3am (KST). It’s fine, though it allows me ample time to enjoy the option of 24hr coffee shops and people watching while I drink my Iced Americano. Coffee shops also give a privy eye to the psyche of the Korean couple.

A pair just walked in holding hands only to pass me on the way to the register , revealing that they both were wearing the same red backpack. This, while adorable, is not an isolated occurrence among Korean couples. This is a form of  “COUPLE TEE,” another exciting, yet embarrassing, trend in fashion here, much like my beloved Idol Yangmal

Like the idol socks, this was an item of Korean culture I was familiar with before I came here from having watched the TV show “We Got Married” and seeing Kim Hyun Joong cringe at having to wear matching t-shirts with his fake wife, Hwang Bo. Not sure if “couple tee” needs more explanation than that, but just in case, they are basically matching tee shirts of the couple’s choosing.

I think it is just a duplicate of a particular shirt, as opposed to them being sold in a pair (Editors note: They sell couple underwear sets at places like Home Plus^^) I have seen a guy wearing a polo shirt and his female counterpart in a matching polo shirt dress but I just attributed that to their own creative twist rather than the items having been sold together. Either way, the site of couple tees always makes me smile (and fangirl on the inside, of course).

Now, many of you may be like my beloved Kim Hyun Joong and find the idea slightly annoying, and you are not alone, as most of my Korean friends feel the same. I, on the other hand, while staving off jealously, can’t help but think the couple tee wearing duos are extremely cute. I will say, however, that Korea is a little too couple obsessed and at times it can get a little overwhelming. Case in point, while working in Busan I stopped into a coffee shop that had it’s third floor reserved exclusively for couples. 0_o

As mentioned before, there are endless possibilities to the couple tee interpretations. Cory told me about a time she witnessed a couple, she thought was only one person seen in double vision, dressed head-to-toe in the exact same…well…everything.

I have acquired a few examples for you of couples who refuse to be held down by the couple tee establishment and have rebelled/conformed all at the same time. And, yes, I know these pictures are creepy, I prefer the term “voyeurist.”

문제는 Richmond, Virginia 기준으로는 2pm 이지만 한국에서는 3am라는 것.
그렇지만 뭐, 괜찮다. 왜냐면 24시간 커피숍에서 아이스 아메리카노를 마시면서 사람구경할 여유를 주기 때문에.
커피숍은 한국 커플의 정신세계를 몰래 지켜볼 수 있는 기회를 주는 곳이기도 하다.

방금 한쌍의 커플이 손을 잡은 채로 내 옆을 지나가 카운터로 를 가는데, 보니까 둘 다 같은 빨간색 백팩을 매고 있다. 이 사랑스러운 광경은, 사실 한국에서는 종종 볼 수 있다. 이것은 “커플티”라는 이곳의 또다른 흥미로운, 그러나 아직은 다소 적응이 잘 안되는 패션 트렌드이다.(마치 나의 아이돌 양말 처럼 말이다!)

이것은 아이돌 양말처럼 한국에 오기 전에 TV 프로그램 “우리 결혼했어요”에서 김현중이 그의 가짜 아내인 황보와 맞춰 입은 티셔츠를 입는 광경을 통해서 이미 친숙해져있던 한국문화의 한 아이템이다. 커플티에 대해서 더 설명이 필요한지는 잘 모르겠지만, 혹시나 해서 한다면, 기본적으로 커플들이 선택한 티셔츠를 맞춰서 입는 것이다.

나는 커플티가 셔츠 두 개를 짝으로 판다고 써 놓긴 했는데,막상 보면 그게 아니라 둘 다 그냥 거의 같은 옷인 것 같다고 생각한다.(편집자 주: Homeplus에서는 커플 속옷도 팔아요!) 근데 어떤 남자는 폴로셔츠를, 그리고 그의 여자친구는 폴로치마를 입은 것은 봤는데 나는 그것이 세트로 묶여서 팔린다기보다는 그들만의 독특하고 창의적인 아이디어라고 생각했다. 근데, 사실 어떤 식으로건 커플티를 입은 사람들을 보면 미소가 지어진다.(물론 나는 그것의 팬이다!)

많은 사람들은 아마도 나의 사랑스런 김현중처럼 이러한 광경을 보면서 짜증이 날지도 모르겠는데, 그건 사실 당신 혼자만의 생각은 아니며 내 한국인 친구들도 그렇게 생각한다. 그러나, 질투심없이 바라본다면, 커플티를 입은 듀오들을 보면 매우 귀여운 것 같다. 또 이야기 하고 싶은 점이 하나 있는데 가끔 한국에서는 너무 커플에 대한 강박관념을 가지고 있어 나는 가끔 그건 좀 지나치다고 생각을 하곤 한다. 예를 들면, 내가 부산에서 일을 했을 때, 한 커피숍의 3층을 오직 커플들만이 이용할 수 있게 해놓은 것을 본적이 있다. o_O

언급한대로, 커플티를 응용하는 방법에는 무한히 많은 가능성이 있다. Cory는 나에게 어떤 커플을 봤다고 말해주었는데, 너무나 머리끝부터 발끝까지 똑같이 차려 입어서 내가 한 사람을 복시로 보는 것 같다고 말해준 적이 있다….. 뭐 어떤 식도 가능하겠지만..

나는 이러한 커플티 세팅에 대해서 거부감을 가지는 커플들을 위해서 몇 개의 예를 준비했는데, 이것을 보고 생각을 바꿀 수도 아`닐 수도 있겠다.

물론 나도 안다, 이 사진들을 보면서 뭔가 소름이 끼칠 수도 있다는 것은….. 나는 실은 관음증을 좋아한다!

Who needs couple tees when you can wear couple socks? When I see couple idol yangmal, then I will be impressed. AJ’s off topic note #567: I spotted (lurked) this couple while having bulgogi pizza and frozen yogurt (beats the combo pizza hut/KFC any day)!

커플 양말을 신을 수 있는 사람들에게는 커플 티 정도는 아무것도 아니겠지? 커플 아이돌 양말을 봤을 때 나는 꽤나 감탄했다. AJ’s off topic note #567: 나는 이 커플들을 불고기 피자와 얼린 요거트(피자헛/KFC 콤보보다 항상 이게 낫지!)를 먹는 도중에 발견했다! 아마 지금쯤 독자들은 이런 생각을 할 것이다.

Now, you might be thinking…”AJ…that is great and all but what about the pictures of…you know…couple TEES.” The pictures aren’t great, but it is much easier to take creepy pictures of someone’s socks than it is to get the front of two peoples’ shirts, this being exhibited by the guy that is definitely looking into the camera over his girlfriend’s shoulder. Whoops.

아마 지금쯤 독자들은 이런 생각을 할 것이다. “AJ야…… 음… 커플티에 대한 것은 굉장한데…. 그러나 찍은 사진들을 좀 그런데…” 물론 사진들의 상태는 좋지 않지만, 실은 두 사람의 셔츠를 정면에서 찍는 것 보다는 사람들의 양말을 찍는 것이 훨씬 쉽다. 이 사진은 자신의 여자친구의 어깨너머로 내가 카메라로 찍는 것을 발견한 것이 분명하다!!! 이런;;;

Recent photo shoot for Nylon shows Amber and Victoria of f(x). The concept of the shoot was supposed to show these two on a date, which I love. Amber, for those who do not know, is pushing very important boundaries in South Korea and even though no mention is ever made of her sexual preference, I think her presence and popularity is an exciting step in the right direction for a LGBT friendly South Korea….AJ off topic sidenote #643

최근에 Nylon 사진 촬영에서의 f(x)의 앰버와 빅토리아. 이 촬영의 컨샙은 이 둘이 데이트를 나가는 장면인데, 나는 이걸 사랑한다.
앰버는, 혹시나 모르는 분들을 위해서, 한국에서 의미있는 “경계선 허물기”를 보여주는데, 물론 그녀의 성적인 선호도에 대해서는 아무런 이야기도 없지만, 나는 그녀의 존재와 인기는 한국내 LGBT(레즈비언, 게이, 양성애자, 트렌스젠더)에 대한 친숙한 인식을 가지는데 있어서 아주 흥미롭고 올바른 한 발걸음이라고 생각한다.

Here is another same sex couple tee. These two are not a couple, though many a Jongkey fangirl will tell you differently. Fans like to pretend their favorite idols are couples, genders aside, and combine their names much like other celebrities (Brangelina, Bennifer, Tomkat, etc.)

I actually got to witness this couple tee moment because, as they wore this on their trip to the US for the SM Town Live concert in LA. I don’t remember yelling so much in such a short span of time as I did during that concert and after party, where I got about 10 feet away from these two cuties wearing these exact t-shirts.

Anyways, what I’ve been meaning to say is…couple tees, JJANG!

LA에서 SM town Live concert을 하기 위해서 이들이 미국에 왔을 때, 나는 이들이 위 커플티를 입은 순간을 직접 눈으로 목격했다.
이 두 귀염둥이들이 사진에서 보이는 바로 그 커플티를 입고 나로부터 10 피트 정도 거리에 있었을 때, 내 일생에서 이렇게 짧은 시간동안, 이런 함성을 지른 적은 없는 것 같다!(물론 그 콘서트와 끝난 후 파티에서도 그랬지만)

어쨌든 내가 하고 싶은 말은… 커플티는 짱이라는 사실!
